The Mustapick Multi-Scale 7-Steel-String Guitar

What a thrill it's been to design and build this guitar for Rune Mandelid! Rune's a highly accomplished and creative Norwegian jazz-and-more guitarist, who commissioned me to build two "twin" 7-string instruments, one with steel strings and one with nylon. His main target tuning for both instruments involves a low A for the 7th string (a fifth below the sixth string of standard tuning). For the other 6 strings he'll be using standard tuning, but down a whole step, except that the first string will be up at concert pitch. So, from low to high, thats A D G C F A E.

For instruments such as this, where the open strings are called on to produce notes of a range that well exceeds two octaves, it's necessary to use a "multi-scale" design in order to have proper string tension on all the strings. "Multi-scale" refers to the angling of the nut, the frets, and the bridge, so that each string has a different scale length.
