Matthew Mustapick Handmade Guitars
The Mustapick Baritone and Deep Baritone
What Is a Baritone Guitar?
Listen to Thunderclouds: a phenomenal piece original music from The Analogues. I'm honored that one of my deep baritones contributes to their music. Take a few minutes to enjoy the other tracks available at their site.

"The first time I played Matt’s Deep Baritone I knew it would become my primary baritone guitar for both the recording studio and the stage. The guitar plays like butter and has a punchy sound that is nothing short of phenomenal. I'm totally in love with it...it's bananas! Matt is so passionate about the guitars he builds. Being an advanced player himself, he’s very aware of what professional players are after. With this instrument Matt's making something much more than a baritone guitar."

Its woods are as follows; Sitka spruce top, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, koa binding, rosette and headplates, and cocobolo fingerboard and bridge.

Scale length: 28.25" - 29", Lower bout: 16", Upper bout: 12", Depth at heel: 4", Depth at tailblock 4.625"

I set up all my baritones twice with two sets of nuts and saddles, one set for normal gauge strings and one for extra heavy gauge strings (.070-.016). With these heavy strings this Mustapick baritone is ideally suited to be tuned anywhere from a fourth lower from B to B, or a fifth lower from A to A, with either standard tuning intervals between strings, or in accord with any alternative tunings you may be familiar with, but lowered down into the baritone range. For example, DADGAD players could can tune down to AEADEA and use the same chord forms they are familiar with. With normal (light or medium) gauge strings it can be tuned down anywhere from a whole step to a major third. Your Baritone/Deep Baritone guitar can be delivered in either configuration. Custom configurations are also available.

This instrument features longer strings (28.9" scale length), and so its design does not rely on looser-than-normal string tension to play in lower frequency ranges. Unlike acoustic basses, which generally sound thin without amplification, the slightly higher range of the baritone guitar can be fully supported by a guitar-sized body, projecting a deep, rich resonance.

This instrument is very comfortable as it is somewhat smaller than the largest jumbo guitars. While the baritone's deep resonance sounds fantastic when strummed with the open chords all guitarists are familiar with, it opens up new challenges for more sophisticated players, inviting them to rethink their playing, and to discover new voicings and approaches for a new frequency register.
