Acoustic Guitar Sessions Presents La Santa Cecilia

La Santa Cecilia is on a roll.

In 2014, this LA-based band’s powerhouse singer, the multi-instrumentalist Marisol Hernandez, co-wrote the haunting ballad “Losing Game” with Elvis Costello, earning their debut recording, Treinta Días, a Grammy for Best Latin Rock Album.

That album—rife with pop and folk songs cloaked in cumbia, bossa nova, and other simmering Latin rhythms—also featured the immigration protest song “El Hielo (ICE),” signaling a commitment to a social-justice issue that is close to the band’s collective heart.

La Santa Cecilia recently released its fourth major-label album, Buenaventura (Universal), performed a high-profile Disney concert, garnered a profile in the LA Times, and played at an immigration rally on Capitol Hill.

On the West Coast leg of a national tour, La Santa Cecilia visited the Acoustic Guitar Sessions studio to perform three songs: the politically oriented “Nunca Más” and the ballad “I Won’t Cry for You,” both from the latest album; and a cover of the Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever,” with a nod to the farm workers who pick those strawberries, from the band’s 2014 album Someday New.
