On 46 albums–three with the influential British folk rock outfit Fairport Convention, and 43 either on his own or with other projects–Matthews has honed a distinctive songwriting style. When he left Fairport, where he collaborated with guitarist Richard Thompson, Matthews realized he needed to learn guitar in order to compose his songs.

“The more I got into it, the more I realized what a valuable songwriting tool the guitar is,” Matthews says.

These days, he has settled on a Martin 000-28 EC.

“I just think they’re making such beautiful sounding instruments these days,” Matthews says of Martin.
