I have played less expensive models many times and I have approved of all of them. I purchased a budget Yamaha dreadnaught a few years ago, and it has turned out to be a sensational guitar. The best qualities are the complex and satisfying tone, and the lack of any sonic characteristics that suggests a bargain price.
